The Academy has a long tradition of dialogue with politics. It makes its network of experts available free of charge to politicians as a source of information and provides information on current issues through expert reports and events. Through its contact with parliamentarians it adopts the concerns of politics and provides detailed answers to the questions raised.
Current position statements The Academy formulates position statements on specific issues and questions that concern the sciences as a whole. It indicates clearly where scientifically-based issues are at stake and where it is acting as the representative of the interests of Swiss researchers. At the same time SCNAT is participating on position statements in the context of the association of the «swiss-academies».
Bern, 31 January 2008 The autonomy of the universities must not be limited: position statement of the Swiss academies
In its position statement on the Federal Law on the Promotion of the Universities and Coordination in the Swiss Third-Level Sector (Bundesgesetz über die Förderung der Hochschulen und die Koordination im schweizerischen Hochschulbereich/HFKG), the Swiss Academies of Sciences request that the maximum possible options for autonomous development be guaranteed and the principles of freedom of teaching and research be anchored in the legislation. Bern, 30. May 2007 Ordinance on the Protection of Dry Meadows and Pastures: consultation process SCNAT welcomes the draft of the dry meadows ordinance. The protection of the remaining dry meadows and pastures requires suitable management. Thus, SNAT approves the planned assessment of the balance of interests with sustainable agriculture and forest management. SCNAT’s position statement (in German) can be found here in PDF format.
Bern, 14 May 2007 Position statement of the Swiss Academies on the European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures
The Swiss Academies of Science state their position on 23 European infrastructure projects. The projects were assessed by the various competent Academies (SAGW, SAMW, SATW and SCNAT). SCNAT took care of the bulk of them. The position statement (in German) can be found here in PDF format.

Bern, 15 January 2007 The SAMS (Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences) and the SCNAT protest against the death penalty for six health specialists in Libya
Five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor are accused of infecting several hundred children with the HIV virus. A court in Bengasi (Libya) recently confirmed their sentencing to the death penalty. The Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) and the Swiss Academy of Sciences join with all those who have already spoken out about this injustice. Bern, 4 December 2006 The Swiss academies of science advocate Switzerland’s association with the 7th EU Framework Programme
The 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technology Development is the most important instrument of European research development. The Swiss academies of science approve Switzerland’s association with the 7th research framework programme. The participation of Swiss researchers in invitations to tender will only be guaranteed through Switzerland’s participation as an associated country. Bern, 2 October 2006 ERI: The Swiss academies of science welcome the increase in the ERI growth rate to 8 percent
The Swiss National Council (main parliamentary assembly) supported the increase in resources for education, research and innovation (ERI) in Flims. The Federal Council intends to increase Switzerland’s involvement in the area of education and research by eight percent. The position statement (in German) can be found here in PDF format.
